Papplewick & Linby III 224-7, Todwick CC 201-9
On a scorching day at Burntstump Park, after losing the toss, an all-round batting display led to a competitive total. Led by an opening stand of 48 by Adam Boucher (69) and Tom Bowers (17), most of the middle order contributed with James Harvey (27), Adam Betteridge (28), Simon Bacon (23), Dane Straw (20 not out) and Kev Rostance (16 not out).
Todwick made a steady start in reply, with tight bowling by Dane Straw and Neil South restricted them to 19-2. However, a fightback by their hard-hitting middle order left them 172-4 needing only 53 more to win in 11 overs. The return of the Papp opening attack however turned the game along with two runouts including that of dangerman Pete Cooper when James Harvey took out one stump with a direct throw from midwicket.
Fine death bowling from youngster Dane Straw, who maintained a straight full length to finish with 1-24 from 9 overs, along with 5-27 from Neil South almost gave Papp maximum points, only prevented by the Todwick number 11 surviving the last 2 balls.
All in all, a good result for the new-look third team.
1st XI Match report vs West indian Cavaliers
WI Cavaliers 88 AO Papplewick & Linby 89-3
They say you can’t keep a good man down. Well after winning the toss on Saturday and asking the Cavs to bat, Phil Defretias showed just what a class act he is. Coming on to bowl first change he destroyed the Cavs batting with a display of swing and seam bowling the likes of which have probably never been witnessed at Papplewick before. Daffy picked up 7 for 23 in 8.1 overs to reduce the Cavs to 88 all out in just 27.1 overs. Yet he was first to admit that everyone played their part and he was quick to heap praise on the rest of the bowling attack.
Opening bowlers Luke Fletcher 7overs for 18 and Brad Matthews 1 for 13 reduced the Cavs to 10 for 2, Matthews having Skipper Steve Atkinson caught behind for 1 and Fletcher showing he can throw that large frame around in the field when hen needs to, producing a diving stop, pick up and throw to run out Hussain for 0.
Jim Rhodes 1 for 29 then got in on the act by dismissing the hard hitting Andy Haye (17) to leave the Cavs 55 for 3. Enter Defretias and the rest is history, John Wakeling picking up 3 catches and a stumping to put the icing on the cake.
Papplewicks’ reply was rocked when opener Tony Betteridge was out LBW to Ricky Anderson for 3. But from that moment on Papp never looked in any danger. Luke Fletcher was next to go for 18, after doing all the hard work he tried to slog-sweep Iftikar and was bowled. This brought Kosela Kulasekara (15) to the wicket, who continued to keep the run rate at 3 an over before being caught behind again off the bowling of Anderson to leave Papp 54-3. However John Wakeling 21 not out and Phil Defretias 26 not out guided Papp home in the 26th of the 73 overs they had to knock off the runs. Papp 20pts Cavs 1pt
2nd XI Match report vs West Indian Cavaliers 2nds
West indian Cavaliers 2ndXI 113 a.o Papplewick & Linby 2ndXI 114-7
Papp 2nds made it an exciting club double over west indian cavaliers this weekend when they followed up the 1st teams win with a win themselves against cavs 2nds. cavaliers won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a flat pitch with the sun beating down. but they very soon began to regret the decision. both papps opening bowlers john thrower and steve alford put on a classic exhibition of swing bowling to reduce cavs to 13 for 4. their excellent early work was followed up by spin bowlers rohan shah and kriss barfield, to reduce cavs 2nds to 113 all out. only assad hussain (35) offered any real resistance. alford returned figures of 4 for 21, shah 4 for 30 and thrower and barfield picked up one wicket apiece. they were all well supported in the field with graeme roberts (2) matt alford and jamie peat taking sharp catches. in reply papplewick were made to struggle by some accurate bowling from sheldon guerra (3 for 29) and ashad ishtiaq (3 for 25.) but some classy batting by jamie peat (32), rohan shah (25), and some dogged resistance in the middle order from matt alford (21) eased them home in the 38th over by 3 wickets.

1st XI Match Reports for May 3rd and 4th...
Papplewick & Linby 97 AO Kimberley 98-3
The only bright spot for Papplewick on a dismal day for the batsmen was the performance of Kosala Kulasekara. Having arrived at Heathrow at 6am Saturday morning from Sri Lanka. Kosala defied jet lag to play positively making 56 in an otherwise poor batting display. Papp were quickly reduced to 17 for 2 by some accurate new ball bowling by Jason Gorman. Luke Fletcher (8) and Graeme Roberts (0) being the victims. When Gorman then removed Skipper Phil Defretias first ball, Papp were left struggling on 45-5. Gorman went on to record figures of 5-33 to rip through the Papp top order, ably assisted by John Shaw who recorded figures of 4-36
Kimberleys reply was jolted by the quick wicket of Nick Langford, who fell LBW to Jim Rhodes for 0 with the score on 9. Enter Josh Mangan Kimberleys Aussie import. Who embarked on a 70 run partnership with opener John Shaw. Before he was trapped LBW by Impressive young leg spinner Wasim Rana. Shaw followed quickly bowled by Rhodes but the damage was done and it was left to Skipper Michael Blatherwick and Tom Collishaw to guide Kimberley home and collect 20 points.
Sheffield Utd 90 AO Papplewick 91-3
Sundays game against Sheffield Utd in the Cockspur Cup could not have been anymore different from the previous day. After winning the toss Papplewick set about their task of bowling the opposition out in quick time. A great opening spell from Brad Matthews (3-23) quickly reducing the visitors to 7 for 2. Then after a mini revival in the hands of David Rogers (20) and skipper Neil Longhirst (25) who took the score to 46, the rest of the Utds batting crumbled to 90 all out with Wasim Rana bowling beautifully to claim 3-15 and Charlie Dagnall picking up 2-17 on debut.
With Luke Fletcher away making his Friends Provident Trophy debut for Nottinghamshire, Wasim Rana opened the innings with John Wakeling. However things did not go to plan as Tom Steel removed Rana (1) and Tiamoor Khan (2) to leave Papplewick 12 for 2. Skipper Phil Defretias then played with his normal aggression and freedom to fire 43 off 34 balls before being trapped LBW. While all this was going on John Wakeling played the anchor role to finish 24 not out and a quick cameo from Rich Winton 11 not out saw Papplewick home and a 2nd round tie away to Wollaton awaits.

2nd XI Match report for 26th April 2008 Vs Whitwell At Hall Lane
The 2nd teams season opener saw them entertain Whitwell at Papplewick Hall. it was a newlook 2nd team with many changes to the team that finished 3rd last season. one of those changes was of course due to the untimely death of leading batsmen Matt Dear during the winter and a minutes silence was held before the game, by both teams and spectators alike, to pay tribute to a talent that will be sorely missed. wily veteran skipper Steve Alford won the toss and had no hesitation in asking the visitors to bat first on what was an amazingly dry wicket for April. Whitwell were soon in trouble losing skipper and leading bat Alan Draycott early to John Thrower who bowled an impressive spell. he was ably supported at the other end by steve alford who trapped the other opener lbw. a change in bowling saw another veteran, Nagasair Sookram, pick up a wicket and 15 year old debutant Dane Straw pick up his 1st league wicket for the club as well. further changes to the bowling saw the introduction of slow bowling at each end - new signing Rohan Shah and youngster Kriss Barfield. Shah returned the very impressive figures of 5 for 38 and Barfield finished the innings by taking the last wicket, leaving Whitwell 111 all out. in reply, openers Shah and Steve Thomas set off chasing the runs scoring freely at 5 an over. Shah at one point hitting 2 consective 6'S off Whitwell's left arm opening bowler, causing comments from Whiwell's beleaguered players calling into question Shah's impeachable eligibility (and also his parentage!) Wickets began to fall steadily with only Shah, Thomas and Sookram making any contributions of note with the bat, but although it was "squeaky bum" time making the last 20 runs, Papp eased home by 4 wickets with plenty of overs to spare making it a 1st and 2nd team winning double start to the season.
